Vacancy Eligibility Test

Introduction : In this type of questions, you are given the necessary qualifications required to be fulfilled by a candidate for a certain vacancy in job/promotion/facility, along with the bio-data of certain candidates who have applied for the same. You are then required to assess the candidate's eligibility or potential and thereby decide upon the course of action to be taken from among the given alternatives.

NOTE : Logical analysis and reviewing the questions carefully are the key factors to answer questions based on this topic.

Example 1 : Study the following information carefully to answer the questions given below. Following are the qualifications for a certain post in a reputed company. The candidate must

  • (A) be an Engineering graduate with at least 60% marks.
  • (B) be not less than 21 years and not more than 25 years of age as on 1.5.2006.
  • (C) have passed the selection test with at least 55% marks.
  • (D) be willing to pay a deposit of Rs. 50,000, to be refunded on completion of training.
  • However, if a candidate fulfills the above mentioned criteria except:

  • (i) at (A) above, but has appeared for the last semester examination and has obtained an aggregate of minimum 65% marks in first seven semesters, his/her case may be referred to the V.P. of the company;
  • (ii) at (D) above, but is willing to pay an amount of at least Rs. 25,000 and has obtained at least 70% marks at engineering degree, the case may be referred to the General Manager of the company.
  • In the following question, detail of the candidate is given as regards his/her candidature. You have to read the information provided and decide his/her status based on the conditions given above and the information provided. You are not to assume anything other than the information provided in each of the following questions. All these cases are given to you as on 1.5.2006. Directions for the answer :

  • a) if the candidate is to be selected,
  • b) if the case is to be referred to the General Manager,
  • c) if the case is to be referred to the V.P,
  • d) if the data provided is not adequate to take a decision,
  • e) if the candidate is not to be selected.
  • Question : Natasha is an IT engineer passed out in 2003 with 52% marks. After getting the engineering degree, she has done MBA with specialization in Finance. She has cleared the selection test with 60% marks. She can pay the deposit of Rs. 50,000. Her date of bırth is 15th September, 1982.

    Solution:-  Clearly, the candidate is:

  • a) to be selected if he fulfills each one of the conditions (A), (B), (C) and (D);
  • b) to be referred to the G.M., if he fulfills (A), (B), (C) and (ii);
  • c) to be referred to the V.P., if he fulfills (i), (B), (C) and (D);
  • e) not to be selected, if he does not fulfill any of the conditions [(A) or (i)], (B), (C) and [(D) or (ii)].
  • However, if the data pertaining to any of these conditions is missing, the answer should be (d) i.e. Data inadequate. Let us prepare a tabular analysis of the given candidate. We shall mark the 'missing data' as N.A.' and the factors not be considered as '-'.  :

    (F) If a candidate who is eligible under (A) and (B) criteria, can pay at least half of the applicable deposit, the case can be referred to the Commander - in - chief.

    (G) The candidate who are eligible under the criteria (A) and (B) but cannot pay even half of the applicable deposit cannot be admitted.

    Based on the above criteria, decide which of the following courses of action should be taken in case of the candidates whose description is provided in the following questions. Please note that you are not to assume any data other than those described. However, you may treat the candidate as 'General Category' candidate if his category is not explicitly mentioned as SC/ST.
